How to play

Normally, you place your bet as you wish, by your own. The call bets however, is made on another field that’s called the race track. If you’re at a casino, this is where the croupier comes in. You simply tell the croupier how you want your bet to be placed, and he or she then places your stake for you on the race track.

The inside bets, which you can read more about in the section about rules, is made directly on the table. The numbers are organized so that all numbers, except for the 0 and the 00, are arranged in three columns of twelve rows. The first row has 1, 2, 3; the second row has 4, 5, 6 and so on. The last row has 34, 35, 36 and the 0 and potential 00 is positioned above the top row. The rest of the table is made up by other boxes for outside bets, and the race track.

Since roulette can be played by many people at once, there needs to be a system to separate which chips belongs to who. This is solved by having special chips of different colors, with each player having a color of their own. The value of each chip is shown on a board that the croupier has. When the players are done playing roulette, the chips is changed to regular cash chips again – so they can be exchanged to money. The roulette chips are only usable by the roulette table.

When all players have made their bets, it’s time to see what the winning number will be. The croupier announces “no more bets” as the ball starts slowing down in the wheel. Once the ball has stopped in a slot, the croupier collects and gives out the right winnings and losses and then the next game can begin.

The table

The roulette table is, in comparison to black jack and baccarat tables, quite large. It is made up by one large wheel with the numbers on it, and one table where the bets are placed. The wheel might seem to be constructed in a completely random fashion, but there is actually a logical explanation. You see, every number has the next higher number right opposite itself. Number 1 has number 2 on the opposite side of the wheel, number 34 has number 35 on the opposite side and so on.

Roulette rules

The game rules of roulette is very simple. The goal is to bet at the number you think will win the next round. That’s really all you need to do, and to get there there are a few different kinds of bets available.

There are nine different bets you can make on a Roulette table; six are known as inside bets and three are outside bets. You can, of course, make more than one bet in other sections of the table. With all bets and payouts, you get to keep your stake if you win. So if, for example, you win 35 times your stake – your will also get your original stake back on top of that.

Here are the different kinds of bets you can make at a roulette table, as well as how they work. The names of these bets at French-speaking casinos are in brackets:

Straight up

You can bet on any number on the table by placing a chip on it including 0 (and 00). If you win you get 35 times your stake. (Numéro plein)

Split bet

A bet can be placed on two adjacent numbers by placing a chip on the line between them. If the ball lands on either number, you win. If you want to bet on two numbers but are sure you want to bet on number 5 you can bet on 2-5, 4-5, 5-6 and 5-8. If you win on any of the numbers, you get 17 times your stake. (A cheval)

Street bet

A bet can be made on any three numbers in a row across the table by placing a chip on the outer line of that row. If the ball lands on any of the three numbers, the pay-out is 11 times your stake. (Transversale plein)

Street bet with zero

Your chips are placed on the line between the zero and 1-2 or 2-3. This means you cover 0-1-2 or 0-2-3. If you win the pay-out is the same as with a regular street bet, i.e. 11 times your stake. (Transversale plein avec zéro)

Corner bet

Betting on any four adjacent numbers is possible by placing the chip on the corner where all four numbers meet. If you win on any of these numbers you get 8 times your stake. (Carré)

Corner bet with zero

This bet is roughly the same as a street bet with zero. You place your chips on the outer line of the zero box. As you cover 4 numbers the pay-out is the same as with a corner bet, i.e. 8 times your stake. (Carré avec zéro)

Line bet

A line bet is a double street bet covering six numbers. The winning payout is 5 times the stake. (Sixain)

Dozen bet

Outside the number boxes there are three boxes marked ‘1st 12’, ‘2nd 12’ or ‘3rd 12’. They cover the numbers 1-12, 13-24, and 25-36. Placing chips on any of these boxes means you cover twelve numbers, which has a pay-out of 2 times your stake. (Douzaine)

Column bet

At the base of the three columns there are three boxes. If you put your bet in any of these boxes you will cover the column above the box. You thus cover 12 numbers and get 2 times your stake if you win. (Colonne)

Outside chances

On the outside perimeter of the table there are six boxes. Bets on these boxes pay even money. If you bet SEK 100 and win you get SEK 100 on top of your stake. The boxes are: RED or BLACK (pay-off on red or black), ODD or EVEN (pay-off on odd or even) and LOW or HIGH (pay-off on numbers 1-18 or 19-36). Different casinos have different rules for when the Zero or Double Zero comes up. Some casinos give you half your stake back. Be sure to check the rules at the casino before you start playing. (Les chances simple)

Online Roulette Variations

As roulette spread across the world, more and more variations came up. Today, there are three main variations that are the most common ones. These are French-, European- and American roulette. The basic game play is the same in all three, but the bets, odds and the wheel are a bit different. Here, we’ll explain what the three variations are all about, and what the differences are.

French roulette

This is probably one of the most played and widely spread versions, as well as it is the original one. As we mentioned earlier, the word Roulette is french for ”little wheel”. The french roulette is also the main version of roulette and the American-, as well as the European roulette, are simply just the french version with a few changes. In French Roulette, the wheel has only one zero.

French roulette is played with mostly french words, but they mean the same thing as you might be used to hear. You can also make call bets, just as usual, but they are often named in french. The bets available are the same as those we listed under “Bets” earlier. Here are some other french words that might be useful:

Rouge / Noir = Red / Black
Impair / Pair = Odd / Even
Manque / Pass = Low (1-18) / High (19-36)
Premiere / Moyene / Derniere 12 = First (1-12) / Middle (13-24) / Last (25-26) dozen

The french roulette also has a few other rules, that might sometimes be a part of the other versions of roulette. These are called La Partage and En Prison, and effects your bet. La Partage gives you half of your bet back, if you have made even money bets and the ball stops at the zero. En Prison keeps your bet if you have made an even money bet and the zero is the winning number. To get the money back, you need to win on the next round. You will not get any extra money, but you at least get your money back.

Obviously, you can not use both En Prison and La Partage at the same time. The table you play at should have information about which rule that applies easily accessed. When playing with one of these rules, the house edge drops to 1.35 percent – making it very advantageous for the players.

American Roulette

American Roulette is a bit different from the french version, mainly because the wheel has 38 slots instead of 37. This is because the extra zero – the double zero. The double zero gives the house an increased advantage of 1/19, or 5.26%.On a five number bet, like 0-00-1-2-3, the house has an advantage of 7.89%.

European Roulette

European Roulette is also one of the more popular versions. Mainly, it works just like the French version and has 37 slots, going from 0 to 36. The casino’s advantage here is 1/37, or 2.70%. However, the call bets are often made in whatever language is suitable and not necessary in french.
