Basic strategies - Black Jack

Blackjack is one of the casino games where players can improve their odds of winning. By learning to implement a strategy in your game you can reduce the casino's odds to almost 50/50. And by adding card-counting techniques to the equation you can improve your odds even further.

The best way to learn Blackjack is to play the game. Reading books and learning different strategies are useful but you also need experience. Playing online is the perfect way to memorise tables that tell you when to take a new card, stand or double. At online casinos it doesn't cost much to play and most of them allow you to use “play money”.

When you first start playing, don't make your bets too high – let your bets match your wallet. There's no point in betting everything you have on five hands if you want to stretch out the enjoyment of playing.

Strategy table
It is useful to start by learning a basic strategy. A good tip is to write it down and have it in front of you while you are playing. When you know it by heart you can start adding more sophisticated strategies to your game.

This table is for games where 6 decks are used. The dealer must stand (stop) when he/she is on 17 and you can double when you have split your cards. The top column is the sum of the dealer's cards, the left column is the sum of your cards. You can use this table even when you have taken 3 or 4 cards.

H = Hit. Take another card.
D = Double. Double your bet.
S = Stand.
P = Split. Split your cards and refer to the table.
