The Origin of Baccarat

Baccarat, CasinoBaccarat is one of the most popular casino games around. So popular, in fact, that it is even featured in the James Bond book Casino Royale. It is very easy to learn and many people share the opinion that Baccarat is the fairest of all games since the house has the smallest advantage (approx. 1.07%). This is why it is so popular at casinos. Macau has the highest number of Baccarat tables in the world.

Created by Felix Falguierein

No one knows exactly who or how the game was invented. There are many different theories. One is that it was created by an Italian gentleman named Felix Falguierein in the middle-ages when the Tarot card was still in use. The game then found its way to France where it had become a popular pastime with the French aristocracy. In the 16th century it spread rapidly across the whole of Europe, where it retains its popularity to this day.

The Italian word "Baccarat" means "zero" in English. It is thus named because many of the cards, e.g. Ten, Jack, Queen and King count as zero in the game.
